Magic System & Spiritual Hierarchy of the Cosmic Dominion

Within the Cosmic Dominion, the Aspects did not merely create worlds. They established a magic system that governs the flow of power. From these laws arises ether, the living substrate of reality itself. This quintessential substance governs countless phenomena across the Dominion, from elemental shaping to distortions of space and time. Manipulating this substance is called the Shyft or shyfting, yet such power does not exist in isolation. It answers to a spiritual hierarchy, one that binds strength to virtue and consequence to pride.
Strata of Dominion
Ancient texts of Seraphilium describe a spiritual hierarchy. At higher levels within this magic system, ether flows with coherence and stability. At lower levels, etheric expression becomes volatile and constrained by matter.
Transcendent Source — Etherea
Etherea’s Love is the source of ether itself, pulsing out from the primal star, the Cosmic Heart, through Lumas. The Ethereal Seals Stargates passively conduct this charged ether throughout the Dominion.
Sixth Stratum — Cosmic Governance
On the sixth tier are the Aspects, who each preside over a branch of magic. Aspects do not shyft ether, only monitor its use and laws under their domain.
Lumas (Lu-MA-sh)
Major Aspect. Avatar of light, order, creation, and enlightenment. Also known as the Light or the Lightmother.
C’haos (Chi-AH-sus)
Major Aspect. Avatar of shadow, chaos, destruction, and restriction. Also called the Shadow or Shadowfather.
Animir (AHH-nee-mee-ere)
Minor Aspect. Avatar of spirit, presence, and voice. Also known as the Spirit.
Aqual (AHH-qu-all)
Minor Aspect. Avatar of water, cleansing, and healing. Also known as the Water.
Terräh (Tear-AII)
Minor Aspect. Avatar of stone, physicality, and natural law. Also known as the Earth.
Ignir (Ig-NEE-ere)
Minor Aspect. Avatar of fire, destruction, and purification. Also called the Fire.
Venti (Vee-ent-TEE)
Minor Aspect. Avatar of wind, change, and scent. Also called the Air.
Fifth Stratum — Celestial Creation
Below the Aspects on the fifth tier are the Old Builders, primordial architects of the Dominion. Records say they dwell on the edge of the Dominion, constantly expanding its boundaries into the Etheric Void; other Builders drift around the universe, repairing or adjusting cosmic architecture as needed. An Old Builder’s shyfting commands enormous power, capable of altering planetary alignments and birthing new worlds—or destroying decaying ones. The Old Builders are the primordial architects of the Ethereal Seals Stargates and countless star systems.
Fourth Stratum — Divine Stewardship
On the fourth tier are beings like the Seraphilium. They act as warriors and defenders of the Dominion, and shyft with high coherence. While a Seraphilium’s power is vast, they have egos that produce moral failings. Such celestial falls lead to catastrophic instability. As such, a Seraphilium can descend to the third stratum at the expense of their celestial powers and memories.
Third Stratum — Mortal Will
On the third tier are the sapient races of planets. Humanoid civilizations dwell here, ranging from the Draconyte Empire to the Apeeron Coalition. Egoistical issues like greed and lust dominant this stratum, and war is rampant on a material level. Mortals have limited shyfting; their magic system depends heavily on equipment and Aspectal alignment.
Second Stratum — Living Matter
The second tier hosts primitive creatures that don’t demonstrate self-awareness. Carnal instincts govern life, and scholars often study wild mammals and plants in their habitats. A few of these primitive creatures shyft the elements in subtle ways, though it’s rare in nature.
First Stratum — Inert Matter
Rocks and crystals: the lowest tier of the spirit hierarchy. Seemingly asleep, gemstones lay resting, unaware and unmoving, as if dreaming. Scholars report sluggish growth from crystals as they bud, suggesting inherent intelligence within the gemstones.
While these gemstones are the lowest tier of the hierarchy, they possess the greatest potential for growth and can be vessels for new souls to inhabit. That unused potential creates a charge unseen in the other tiers; shyfters often use these gemstones to augment magic.
Gemsouls
What is a Soul?
A soul is a localized coherence of ether, awakened to self-awareness by Etherea’s sustaining Love through the Lightmother. A soul anchors identity within matter and grants a being the capacity for moral alignment and intentional shyfting.
Through Etherea’s Will, souls strive to engage in the Dominion through avatars and play a part of the universe. To take an avatar requires a bonding between matter and soul.
It is much easier for a soul to nest within a gemstone, and every jump in strata increases the difficulty and requirements exponentially. New souls prefer rocks and crystals because of their stability, while a more developed soul may qualify for a Seraphilium avatar. A soul nested in a crystal is a gemsoul.
What Determines a Gemsoul’s Personality?
If the soul was well-nourished from the Cosmic Heart, it begins stable and whole. If it was starved, it begins anxious, reactive, or suggestible.
Left starved and hungry, it becomes more vulnerable to corruption by Voidspawn or C’haos.
Each soulpact leaves an imprint. Betrayal and abuse can scar a gemsoul. Friendships and loyalty strengthen it.
Gemstones and Dormant Potential
Without movement or thought, gemstones store all their energy. This allows ether buildup and amplifies shyfting ability. Though there are countless varieties of gemstones, some possess stronger souls or larger ether stores than others.
The Old Builders created Seal Gems, rocks designed to harmonize with the Ethereal Seals Stargates. These Seal Gems command enormous power and can attract powerful souls, thus allowing mortals a magic system almost comparing to Seraphilium.
Ascension
To graduate from one stratum to the next, a soul must develop enough spiritually. An underdeveloped soul that enters an advanced avatar, like a Seraphilium, would quickly destabilize.
It takes millennia for a soul to graduate from the first stratum to the second, and ten times as long for each additional stratum.
Soulpacts
Soulpacts are conduits between a higher soul and a lower soul. This occurs primarily between mortals and gemstones, though Seraphilium also make pacts with gemstones. This serves as a stopgap for lower souls as they connect to higher levels of consciousness.
A compatible individual swears a contract upon a virthrall, a weapon or relic, infused with a soul gemstone. If the gemstone’s inherent intelligence agrees, this binds all together in the soulpact.
A gemstone serves as the anchor for ether, a virthrall the means, and the individual as the operator. The operator then becomes a shyfter, borrowing from the latent potential of the gemstone to augment magical ability.
Magic System Soulpact Terms
A soulpact is a spiritual covenant formed between a shyfter and a sentient soul bound within a gemstone. The agreement is not arbitrary, for it is built upon shared intention. The shyfter provides a means for the gemstone’s soul to induce change whereby it normally cannot do anything as a crystal; the gemstone grants enhanced power in return.
Both parties must consent to a defined objective. The gemstone grants access to its Aspect-aligned ether. The shyfter, in return, agrees to wield that power under the pact’s moral and functional boundaries.
If the shyfter deviates from the agreed purpose, etheric backlash occurs. This manifests as nervous system burnout, hallucinations, fever, spinal burning, or progressive psychological instability. Even ignoring or doubting one’s purpose under the soulpact can be dangerous.
A soulpact’s duration is indefinite, and the shyfter suffers the symptoms until fulfilling the soulpact.
Examples:
- A shyfter bonds with a ruby infused with a gentle gemsoul to overthrow a tyrant. The gemstone channels Ignir, granting flame. The pact requires that fire be used only for liberation and not cruelty. If the shyfter begins slaughtering for pride or domination, the pact fractures and etheric burnout begins.
- A shyfter bonds with an emerald infused with a contemplative gemsoul to steward an academy. The gemstone enhances intellect and memory. The pact requires that knowledge be used to build others, not demean them or exhaust oneself in vanity.
- A shyfter bonds with an onyx infused with a demented, hungry gemsoul to gain speed for survival and theft. The gemstone agrees, but demands blood sacrifice at each full moon. This pact carries darker terms and escalating spiritual cost.
Gemsoul Sacrifice
A mortal or Seraphilium not bound to another soulpact may willingly surrender their soul into a gemstone, merging with the existing gemsoul and forming a new composite consciousness. Inside the gemstone, time is slow and reflective. Without sensory input, the soul confronts only memory and truth. Over centuries, distortions unwind, ego burns off, and identity re-centers.
With a sacrifice by a noble soul, the infusion can stabilize or heal the corruption within a gemsoul. When the sacrifice comes from a corrupted mortal or Voidspawn-aligned being, the fusion destabilizes the crystal matrix and shortens the lifespan and integrity of the gemstone. Etherea’s underlying order favors virtue. Corruption can distort, but it cannot permanently overpower a freely given act of sacrificial good.
Aspectal Alignment of the Shyfting Magic System
Each gemstone carries a speck of an Aspect inside the crystalline matrix. Ruby, for example, aligns with Ignir; pearl, with Lumas; onyx, with C’haos; jade, with Venti. But the personality of the gemsoul determines whether fire from a ruby purifies or burns indiscriminately.
The Emotional Imprint of a Soulpact
When a soulpact completes, the shyfter, left magicless, returns to a mundane existence as a mortal. The soulpact leaves an imprint on the ex-shyfter, which may produces residue nightmares, night sweats, a feeling of lack inside the person.
Gemsouls prefer rest between soulpacts, and they remember their past owners. Interruption of rest may produce electrical shocks, burns, and hysteria in the ex-shyfter if they try to pact again too soon. Gemsouls process ether residue between pacts. If not given time, they discharge unstable ether back through the person’s nervous system.
This does not mean the virthrall cannot be wielded as a plain weapon or a tool, only that no shyfting can occur and the magic system is inaccessible. Once rested, the gemsoul may pact again with the same shyfter.
While multiple soulpacts simultaneously are possible, emotional instability of the shyfter increases exponentially with each soulpact. It’s as if multiple souls struggle for attention within a single body at once. The shyfter’s spiritual endurance is also tested, and stretching it too far for too long can damage the mind. Most long-term shyfters either become demented or learn to ground themselves through meditation called soulstill.
Crystalsmithing & Crystalengineering
Also called gemsmithing and gemengineering.
A gemstone without a soulpact is not inert, but it is limited. Without a sworn covenant, an imbued tool or weapon must rely solely on its internal etheric reserves. Its functions remain stable and predictable, though far weaker than when awakened through pact.
Anyone with proper training may operate soulpactless crystal devices. These are considered technology rather than shyfting.
Crystalsmiths (or gemsmiths) refine raw stones and fuse them within etheric furnaces, shaping them into usable matrices. Crystalengineers (or gemengineers) study the internal lattice of gemstones and design systems that regulate, distribute, or stabilize ether flow.
Examples include:
- Sapphire water crystals embedded within municipal pipes to regulate flow and temperature.
- Garnet earth crystals fused into fortress foundations to reinforce structural integrity.
- Jade wind crystals installed in ventilation shafts to circulate and purify air.
- Topaz storm matrices woven into tall metal poles to draw and absorb electricity to be stored later
Such technologies allow civilizations to harness the Aspects without swearing a soulpact, though always within measured limits.
The Art of Shyfting
Shyfting is the practice of channeling ether through a soulpact.
A gemstone alone cannot shyft, and a mortal alone cannot shyft. Only when a shyfter swears a soulpact with a sentient gemsoul does true change become possible.
In this covenant, the shyfter provides agency and embodiment. The gemstone provides amplified Aspectal dominion. Together, they alter reality.
The Bond Between Shyfter and Gem
A soulpact cannot exist without its gemstone anchor. A shyfter separated from their bonded gem or virthrall will instinctively summon it back across distance.
If reunion is blocked, the shyfter experiences escalating pain. Ether strain reverberates through the nervous system as if a limb were torn from the body; sealing belts and collars called dunbuckles sever a shyfter’s ether and ability to communicate with the gemstone and virthrall.
Ether Flow and Burnout
A soulpact channels immense ether through the shyfter’s nervous system.
Ether flows most densely along the spine, rising from its base toward the brain and glandular centers. Overuse first manifests as heat along the spine and a burning pressure beneath the skin.
Other symptoms of overexertion include but are not limited to:
Flushed skin
Excessive sweating
Tremors
Fatigue
Glandular strain
Internal heat surges
Continued overuse can “cook” the shyfter from within, leading to collapse, delirium, or long-term nerve damage.
However, shyfters adapt. Through discipline and repeated strain, their nervous systems strengthen. An adept can channel tenfold the ether of an initiate without collapsing.
Intention and Awareness
Shyfting requires awareness of the element being influenced. All matter contains ether, from stone to wind to flesh. A soulpact grants dominion over a specific Aspectal school, but intention determines precision and severity.
A shyter relies on intention, body gestures, and spoken words called soulsongs to evoke the soulpact’s power. Without an environmental element presence, the shyfter relies on subtle ether stored inside a virthrall. This method produces weaker results, like a water shyfter attempting to shyft in a desert or a light shyfter in darkness.
Aspectal Dominion
Each gemstone and its varities aligns with a specific Aspect.
A sapphire may grant dominion over water and moisture, while blue topaz may channel more jagged ice
A ruby channels flame and thermal force, while a garnet subterranean specialized more with magma.
A jade commands wind and air, while an emerald commands healing breath and swirling leaves
A yellow topaz channels erratic light, while a diamond channels controlled light.
The scope of influence scales with skill, and a novice jade shyfter might stir a breeze, while an adept may summon a hurricane.
Virthrall Expression
The form of the virthrall shapes how power manifests:
- A jade-bound sword might release compressed wind shockwaves that slice stone.
- A ruby-bound hammer could fracture the earth and summon magma.
- A sapphire-bound bow might conjure ice arrows without ammunition.
- A diamond-bound harp could project tangible notes of radiant light.
- A topaz-bound wardrobe could electrify armor, shocking attackers on contact.
- A garnet-bound vest could harden its fabric, protecting its wearer
Between virthrall design, soulgem personality, Aspectal alignment, and soulpact conditions, no two shyfters manifest power identically.
Shyfting as a Magic System
The Cosmic Dominion is vast, yet its power does not move without law. The Aspects shape the currents of ether, and shyfting flows only through covenant. Such power is never free. It answers loyalty and recoils from betrayal. Those who take up a soulpact do not rule the elements. They learn, slowly and often painfully, how to bear them.
For in the Dominion, power is not seized. It is sworn, endured, and answered for.
